The new year begins with a big question: are sign-on bonuses actually useful recruiting tools?

Tim and Jackie discuss how these bonuses can backfire for carriers and where that money can have more impact. Jackie explains how some carriers are moving that money into higher CPMs rather than bulk amounts paid out over several months/years.

Several drivers call in to share their thoughts on carrier communication and where they go to look for new jobs.

In the last episode of 2020, Tim and Jackie talk about what it takes to retain owner/operators and independent contractors. Jackie brings up the role of quality and consistent communication while still respecting boundaries, off the clock is off the clock.

Their first caller, Lost Boy, is an owner/operator who has been with his carrier for 5 years. His carrier just rolled out a “Retention and Retirement” program where the carrier contributes $1,500 annually to the trucker’s retirement account. Not only is this going forward but they backdated to the original date of hire. This is how to retain drivers!

Caller Two, Jerry, brings up an excellent suggestion of treating drivers like customers. They should be listened to, valued, and respected instead of being treated as labor turnover.

Tim and Jackie spoke to drivers today about what keeps them at their current company. And believe it or not just about pay and sign-on bonuses, it comes down to how you are treating your drivers.

Rooster called in and said that when he sees a sign on a bonus his first question is how long will it take to get paid out. He recommends companies look at mileage, stop pay, and a performance-based annual bonus. Otherwise, with a sign-on bonus, he is forced to “job hop” saying that sometimes he can make more money with sign-on bonuses.

Another driver Emily called in and said that she loves working at her company because there is an open-door policy with their drivers. She has a personal relationship with the president and feels valued. The president and operations team come into the driver lounge to talk to the drivers and really get to know them. Things have changed a bit during COVID -19 but recommends honoring your drivers not just on driver appreciation week but all year round.

In this special episode, we honor truck drivers for National Truck Driver Awareness Week. NTDAW provides a chance for America to honor and thank these national heroes, let them know how much we appreciate them, and let them share their remarkable stories.

Jackie and Tim talk to drivers about how they got into the trucking industry. Tim shares how his dad, a professional truck driver, would lift him into his tractor to teach him all about the truck on Sunday afternoons. More drivers share similar stories including Martin, who is a 4th-generation driver.
